    There isn't anything special about Madiera. The food is NOT anything to write home about and the owner is a real jerk. Being born and bred in EP I unfortunately had to have interaction with him. I gave the restaurant a try a couple of times but between the meza mez food and the owners arrogance and old school mentality, I would NEVER give my money or business to this place

    This is my favorite Portuguese restaurant in the Providence area. They have quite a selection, but I almost always get the same thing...the Polvo Madeira. A tasty octopus stew in a red wine sauce with potatoes. I have this with the Sangria for a great dinner. The portions are huge and the price is great for what you get. I have had other entrees that were just OK, but I go there for the polvo!

    Imagine that Maderia is authentic Portuguese, down to the embarrasing drunk in-laws. Finally made it to East Prov's Madeira to throw down with an honest-to-goodness plate of bacalao. Was surprised to see a packed parking lot, with music thumping from inside. Ends up, there is a ballroom upstairs, where we presume (from the emanating Portuguese pop) a wedding reception was taking place. Was seated downstairs, which was loud (from the wedding), and cold (it was July!). Ordered the bacalao done fried, accepting the waiter's suggestion that I substitute for boiled potatoes. Good choice, as the dish came swimming in olive oil and garlic. Good olive oil and garlic, but definitely too much for thin-cut fried potatoes. The fish had that fine substantial tooth, firm without being rubbery, and was not excessively salty. Somewhat of a challenge to finish, but that was a good thing. Will have to return for the grilled option. Also got to sample the house-style kabobs. As a side note, it's odd that a Portuguese restaurant would describe a signature dish as a shish-ka-bob, using a Middle Eastern language when "marinated, grilled skewered meat, Portuguese-style" would do. They were okay. Reminders for next time. 1. Eat outdoors on the fake boat/fake lagoon. 2. Order the octopus. 3. Throw my own wedding reception and stick it to everyone else.

    OK, so lets preface this review with Madeira restaurant was fabulous . There's been a steady decline in their food and service over the past years. Their food is now on the bland side. There main courses tend to be on the luke warm instead of steaming fresh. The vegetables seem to be the frozen variety and tend to have no added seasonings. The soda tends to be flat tasting more like the consistency of sugar water, whether clear like Sprite or dark in color like Coke. The service seems to be rushed. There was a point where I had just finished a chicken wing and the waiter was behind me waiting for the plate. Until these problems are addressed, I recommend another choice.

    Man, what a dissapointment. I heard nothing but good things about this place. The decor is ok, bar is pretty decent. Outside seating seemed nice. The things I did not like: Food and water Every table besides ours was served with water. When we asked for water, the girl did not understand us as I dont think she spoke english. She seemed nice though when she understood what we were looking for.When the water came, it had a fruit fly frozen in the top ice cube (there were also a couple flying around in the dining area as well). My party ordered shrimp which they said was good, im not a shrimp eater. The bread they brough by was toasted for what seemed to be a few hours before and served with fresh bread. Its a little odd to toast bread a while before and serve it cold which makes it like a cruoton. We ordered a second order of bread which seemed to be a bit better. As for the meal, I ordered a special of beef tips and chourico with rice. There was nothign special about it at all. I should have seen the red flag go up when i wasnt asked how I wanted the steak cooked. It came out well done and very chewy, almost seemed frozen and thawed out. Potatoes were average. Chourico was ok. Everyone else meal was average. It is priced quite similar to the restaurant Spain but not in the same league as spain. Service and food and ambiance are far superior at Spain. Unfortunately this is my first and last time.

    The place is a huge, multi-floor, peach-colored, many-roomed complex. We sat in the corner of what I assume is the main dining room, but there was also a bar and outdoor seating area on the other side of the restaurant that can handle even the planet's most popular Portugese person's party with panache (alliteration is fun!). I think our order encompassed the highlights of Portugese cuisine (although no goat). To start, we got a dozen littleneck clams on the half-shell, an order of littlenecks baked in a garlic, olive oil and white wine sauce, plus a massive piece of flaming chorizo. The littlenecks were fresh and briny, while the baked ones were eaten almost instantly. The charred exterior of the chorizo provided a nice counterpoint the meaty, slightly spicy interior. All of this was washed down with sangria, making for a very good start to our meal. Each of our mains were generously portioned. I got the "Paelha A Valenciana" (pictured above). The saffron rice was topped with copious shrimp, mussels, squid, crab, fish, chorizo and pork (plus a lobster tail). There was so much that, even shared, we could barely finish half. My brother got the "Espetade A Albertino I," a 20oz. sirloin served on a massive skewer. He ordered itmedium rare, but it looks closer to medium. Either way, it was a nice piece of steak. My mom got the "Gambas Recheadas," which were shrimp with a seafood stuffing. I only had a bite, but it was very good, tasting (and looking) like there was sweet potatoes in the stuffing. Yet, when we asked about it, our friendly waiter looked at us like we were nuts. Either way, this is a good dish and worth trying. Finally, my dad got "Carne de Porco Alentejana," or marinated pork with roasted potatoes and littlenecks. Very flavorful, with tender pieces of pork, but also extremely heavy. If you're craving Portugese food in the Providence area, Madeira is definitely worth checking out (although I hear that the closer you get to Fall River, Mass., the better the Portugese food).

    After driving 9 hours through the snow with only a crappy banana muffin and cup of coffee to tide me over..... I was a bit hungry. So I met some friends for dinner at Madeira. First off I was totally surprised by the sheer size of this restaurant. When I heard it was a Portuguese restaurant I figured that it would be a small mom and pop storefront restaurant. It was a split level monstrosity with a separate bar and a very boisterous upstairs area. It's a good thing that this place has a huge parking lot. We got there fairly late for dinner 9-ish so we were seated immediately. We asked the waiter for a recommendation and we all settled on a halibut steak which was quite frankly amazing. It came with a side of rice, potatoes, broccoli, and carrot slices. The food deserves 4 to 5 stars but I docked it a point or two because I ordered a Becks and received a Heineken and my friends ordered a calamari app and never received it. I'll definitely be back and if the service is better I'll give them a new review.

    Come here and try the food for yourself! Went to Madeira with my boyfriend on a weekday, a couple of hours before closing and sat at the bar area. It was our 1st taste of Portugeese food we more than LOVED IT! Upon reading a small handful, though mainly positive reviews for the resturant we decided to give the place a shot. Boy, did we score eating here! We're still thinking about the dishes we ordered (now almost a week), it was that memorable AND good! Oh, and our waitress was fun, very helpful and nice. We felt like we were in someone's home and our waitress, a relative that made sure you ate well. Ha. We went with the following dishes: Appetizer - Chourico `a Bombeiro - Flame grilled Portuguese sausage (5 Stars) This dish was quite the show-stopper! Great photo opt! The char rendered from the flambed sausage was cripsy and added a wonderful smokiness to the meat. SO GOOD! Caldo Verde - Kale, chourico & potato broth soup (3.5 Stars) Hearty soup. If you don't like the taste of dark greens you might not enjoy this dish. A tad too heavy on the salt. Would be wonderful on a cold night. Entree - Espetada `a Madeirense Madeira style shish-ka-bob served with rice, Portuguese fries & seasonal vegetables (4.5 Stars) Cooked medium-rare the beef, it was perfectly marinated. Served with on the skewer and proped up on the table with its own stand, the dish is grand and would have your neighbors wishing they ordered what you did! Sides were ok, but the main attraction is the meat. Carne de Porco Alentejana Marinated pork with roasted potatoes & littlenecks (5 Stars) HUGE ORDER! Wow. The pork was very tender and the wine and seasoning infused in the dish like it was cooked down for hours. There is a hint of spice to the dish which I loved. The littleneck clams were definitely not 'little,' was surprsed with the generous serving. Loved that the food was hot, may be because of their made-to-order policy. Between the two of us we had more than half of our food leftover. We ended up packing it to go and had it the next day, and, yes, it was still good. Can't wait (to one day) go back; only 3.5 hours from NYC!

    I'm new to Portuguese cuisine; my husband is the son of immigrants and he's made some classic dishes for me and although tasty, it's not my favorite type of ethnic food. After eating here, though, I'm now hoping that he makes more for me, and soon! The place is delicious. The calamari was exceptional. Fantastic range of seafoods and meat dishes. Everything was well seasoned and flavorful. My chicken dish was absolutely mouthwatering and I've been craving it ever since. Our waiter was a gem - he spoke to my in-laws in their native tongue and spoke to me in my native tongue. He was charming, and excellent with helping us make selections off of the enormous menu. He was even stuck in the middle of the "who gets the check" battle and handled it so gracefully that my father-in-law couldn't get upset when Steven and I paid. Well done, sir. The facility is cavernous and for a brief time we were the only people in the more formal dining area. that was weird, but soon the church crowd came in and we felt much more comfy. i can see how this place would be hoppin' at night, and i can see why it's popular for rehearsal dinners and weddings and such. i think it'll be on the regular rotation whenever we head back east. yum!

    I went here on a recent business trip to Providence. I had hoped to eat at the better-reviewed O'Dinis, but they're closed on Tuesdays. I'd have to say I was pretty underwhelmed. I had two specials of the day, Clams Casino for starter and a Stuffed Sabre Fish for entree. The clams were swimming in oversalted and underflavored, mushy bread crumbs, that I mostly just dug through to get at the littleneck clams--why I ate them all I don't know, because the clams were so overcooked, they were reduced to little rubbery knots. The stuffed Sabre fish (also known as scabbard fish) was also pretty overcooked, blackened at the edges and heavily salted. The vegetables the fish came stuffed with (wrapped around), green beens and sliced carrots, were uninspired, but cooked nicely al dente The small, accompanying potatoes were interesting. They looked to have been skinned, boiled, then deep fried. Nice crunchy starch exterior and a moist richness. These were good to cleanse the palate of the mouth-numbing salt infusion.

    My friends and I were craving a nice Portuguese meal so we decided to go to Maderia earlier tonight. What a excellent choice! I've been here before on several occasions with my family but never out with friends for dinner. We opted for the bar side which while less formal than the main dining room, is still beautifully decorated and nicely complimented with a built in fireplace. Our server was prompt and super nice, I cant remember her name but she bent over backwards to satisfy us. Right after we sat down she came over and introduced herself and had glasses of water, bread,butter, lemon wedges, and some black portuguese olives for us to munch on while we browsed the menu. We ordered the red sangria pitcher, something we typically order when we visit any a Italian or Portuguese Restaurant. It was so good and our server made sure our glasses were always full! We ordered the Little Necks and Chourico (Espanhol) for a appetizer. We were all surprised about how generous they were with the Little Necks. That is a HUGE plus as those are my favorite. The sauce was perfect in taste the onions and peppers were so good that I kept filling up plate and dipped some bread. I ordered the Bife a Casa which is a 12oz sirloin topped with a fried egg and slice of ham sitting in house sauce. I asked for mine medium. The dish was said to come with fried potatoes, rice and steamed veggies my friends ordered the baked stuffed shirimp dish and the lemon grilled chicken madeira. Both came with the usual sides. Our entrees arrived about 30 minutes later, our jaws dropped when we saw he portion size! While the dishes are not cheap, roughly 12-28 dollars in range, you most certainty get your moneys worth. My steak was cook PERFECT! I was so delighted. The juices in the medium cook compliment the house sauce well. The whole dish was a bounty of perfection. The baked stuffed shrimp were full of flavor and the lemon chicken was not dry whatsoever. I would like to conclude with a 5 star rating all around. Make sure your hungry when you come and if your not too hungry you will be once you walk in the front door and smell the food! The service is top notch and the food is so full of flavor that even when you know your full you just cant put your fork down! Parking is easy with a private lot and easy access from the highway(about a 12 dollar cab ride from downtown) Like I said they also have a more formal dining area as well as several banquet rooms. The building is huge and beautiful! The server was on point and very polite and personable. She had us all laughing several times. And the outdoor patio is beautiful for the nicer months or if you want to sneek out for a smoke. Keep up the good work Maderia

    I have consistently been disappointed with the quality of service and food at this restaurant, but this past weekend took the cake. Our family booked the upstairs banquet room for our family reunion, in which our Portuguese relatives attended from thousands of miles away. Upon arrival at the restaurant, we learned that the owner had triple booked the room for the evening. After months of coordination and organizing this event, we were all disappointed at the lack of communication to say the least. Not only was the event triple booked, but we were forced to split the room with a wedding reception. The music was so loud we couldn't speak to one another and couldn't hear the presentations that our members had worked so hard on. There was simply a three foot divider between us and the wedding party DJ. Might I add that this was not the fault of the wedding party, it was the fault of the restaurant events coordinator. You just don't book a wedding reception with loud music in the same room as another event, period.We received no apology for the disaster, nor did we receive any offer of compensation (might I add that booking the room was around $2000). Four courses were served us, beginning around 8:30 pm. There were two servers for our entire party of approximately 100 guests. The courses were spread out over a 2.5 hour time period. No water was even served at the table. Instead they put a pitcher of syrupy coke at each table. Strike two. Course one: a Portuguese soup which was pretty good, although a bit brothy overall. The salad that was served was, well, a salad. Unfortunately the tomatoes tasted old and frozen and the Italian dressing tasted store bought. Course two came out half an hour later. It was a fried frozen fish topped with some sort of Kraft cheese slices and a butter sauce. It was certainly on par with Long John Silvers fried fish sticks. At that point, I was so hungry that I still ate most of mine. It was quite disappointing however, so we waited another half hour for the chicken dish. Course three was stuffed chicken. The stuffing part was decent but the chicken was dry as a bone with very little flavor. Course four was the worst tasting flan I have ever had. It was too eggy and runny. Most people didn't get halfway through the dessert before they set it aside. Overall the food was awful and the drinks they served at the bar were even worse. It was a good thing that we had wine at the table because the 'sangria' that they made me and my girlfriend was awful and tasted like soda...and trust me, I've had a lot of sangria different parts of the world so I know what good sangria should taste like. This was one of the worst dining experiences I have had anywhere. The owner/ booker/ whomever is obviously a greedy individual who has no respect for his customers, service etiquette, or quality of food that his restaurant serves. If you want good Portuguese food when you come to Providence, do yourself a favor and avoid Madeira restaurant at all costs.

    Went to a professional dinner meeting here in the upstairs room. A Portuguese restaurant serves Portuguese beer - a plus. The buffet line was delicious, with offerings of pork, fish and chicken that demanded that you eat and eat.

    Great Portuguese food.....i like sitting near the bar side....the other side is more formal.....try the Portuguese Cabernet ....its on the vinho list......w/ franci - you must experience it, if you like to try foods from all over the world....the food will knock your socks off....... In summary, i will list in bullet point the special points: - Great food - great wine list - nice atmosphere welcome to Portugaul, right here in E. Prov.

    Went last night. Wanted to love it but I have to say that it was just ok. Waiter was inattentive, had to remind him to bring us water and bread. He brought wine and tried to pour it in a filthy wine glass. Silverware also had smudges all over. Got the $28 filet skewer, a great value and the steak was cooked perfectly. The sides were unremarkable, fried cornmeal tasted fishy, likely from the oil it was cooked in. The rice was boring and the Portuguese fries were good but would have been better if they came with a side of sauce. Veggies were boiled carrots and broccoli, like something from a cafeteria. Ordered a cappuccino and it was served in a beer mug with a straw! Weird presentation. The cheesecake was served with canned strawberries. We ended our dinner watching the entire staff stripping down and rearranging all the tables. We wanted to get an after dinner drink but opted to go elsewhere since they seemed more focused on setting up tables then attending to their paying customers. (this was around 10pm and they don't close until 11pm). Anyway, the good steak didn't make up for the bad service, dirty dishes and mediocre sides. I don't think that I will go back...

    I liked the food. Fresh, hearty dishes. The portions are huge. The atmosphere is pleasant enough. They make a nice (red) sangria. But since we didn't know anyone in the restaurant, we experienced less than stellar service. The wait staff was polite but standoff-ish. They appeared to want to cater to people they were most familiar with instead of new customers. We were even seated after people who walked in after us. It took almost twenty minutes for someone to come to our table to take our drink order. Parking is easy enough, but I will not return to Madeira.

    This place has great Portuguese food. The prices are a little higher per plate, but you getter a PLATTER of food! It's amazing! In the summer, they have this awesome patio with makeshift boats on a man made pond that you can be seated on to eat your dinner. It is worth the drive!

    I have been wanting to try this place for a while and finally made my way down there. I was not dissapointed. Lets just say this place is not for vegetarians or those on a diet. Started with the Chourico `a Bombeiro appetizer. I have had this standard portugese sausage many times and this one stood out from the others. Combined with the table bread and olives, this was a great start. We all agree, portions are gi-normous. The reputation of this place is red meat and thats what we did. We each had a different type of steak and I had the roastbeef special. My plate literally looked like a side of beef was on my plate. What really set this meal apart for me though was the way the potatos are prepared and served with the meat drippings (grease) and sauce. I could not dip enough of my potatos and bread into this stuff. The flavor was so good! We sat in the bar section and the atmosphere was great. Our waiter was outstanding and I would say typical of european table service. His appearence at our table was always timely and never made us feel rushed which is so typical of the american dining experience. Desserts were good but nothing spectacular. We had the rice pudding and the flan. With drinks, appetizers and desserts, we paid about $40 per head. For this type of dining experience i would say the meal was well worth it.

    This place has great seafood and huge portion sizes. Good selection of wine and a long menu. I was overwhelmed. The staff was friendly and they had free parking. Just know that the Paella serves 4 easily.

    Uncertain whether I should make a reservation, I called to take the suggestion of the host. She recommended making a reservation, but since I had noticed that there was a seemingly less formal "bar-section" I opted for that side of the restaurant and it was welcome. We weren't in cut-offs and tank tops, but my cotton skirt and t-shirt fit right into the relaxed atmosphere in the bar section. When we arrived at 8:30, the main room of the restaurant was PACKED. The bar was less busy, but a large group had the banquet room occupied for an 85th birthday party. The attendees were finishing their meals when we arrived and everything looked delicious. Before I arrived, I was skeptical about the food, because I hadn't eaten Portuguese food before. The dishes on the tables we passed looked good though. I thought it was only because I was hungry, but I was just cautious. From the bread to the last bite, the food was great. Even though we anticipated a wait of up to 45 minutes for the food (they publish a 30-45 minute wait for all meals since they are cooked to order) we decided against ordering an appetizer. It was a good thing too, neither of us finished our meals despite amazing efforts. I had the Pork Cutlets in Red Wine and my friend had a steak dinner with ham and fried egg on top. Both dinners came with vegetables, rice and Portuguese fries (homemade chips). Simply tasty. On a side note, I've been told that this is the best Portuguese food in RI. I don't know from experience, but now that I've found Madeira, I might never take the chance at another Portuguese place.

    This is a purely catering review. Having been a second time for meetings and lectures, I'd say that while the secluded space is private, the food was really unremarkable The fried fish was bland and the roast beef tough. The flan also tasted mass produced and a bit too much like an egg tart. The alcohol selection decent, although lacked some of the finer selection of scotches and whiskey that I've come to expect at a reputable restaurant.. Food: 3 stars Service: 3 stars Price: n/a

    Horrendous. I wish I could give this restaurant no stars. I really want a great Portuguese restaurant. This was just terrible on all counts. The service was horrible. It was nearly to the point where my gf and I were confused who would actually come to ask what we wanted. It seemed they had one waiter per table, very inefficient. Also, it is the middle of summer, the A/C seemed to be broken. I was chugging water and legit sweating. The food was average at best. I was just so uncomfortable and angry at the whole situation I wanted out of there immediately. Take it from me and avoid the heck out of Madeira.

    We had reservations for a table of 11 on a Sunday, and sat outside on one of their boats. It was a hot day, but there was some shade from the umbrellas at the table. It was nice to hear the water around you while on the boat, but it smelled a lot like chlorine which was a bit much. I used the bathrooms outside and they were not clean at all. I would suggest using the ones inside the restaurant. Our server was nice, however he was hardly there. It took forever to get drinks (probably around 20 minutes) and after we ordered our food it took about 1.5hours for it to come!! We only ordered a couple of appetizers and then our meals..The wait was unbearable. After we were done eating we still had to wait around for about 30 more minutes to just pay the bill and leave. We were there for 3 hrs total and it was little much..everyone agreed. I ordered my steak medium rare and it came out well done...Most likely it was sitting around forever waiting to be served!! The rice was so extremely bland and lacked seasoning. No one at my table ate it. I did not try the caldo verde but my cousin did and she did not like it much. She said it had too much potato and was thick. calamari appetizer was ok, but I have had better. The chicken wings WERE really good at least, as well as their sangria. My Fiance ordered the steak with the egg, and the egg was cooked all the way through and not runny at all, and the sauce that came with it covered the entire plate so all of his portuguese fries were soggy and covered in sauce. I think they should put less sauce so the guest as the option of eating the fries crispy and with ketchup, if desired. It was a hot day and they did not offer any free water, so we had to buy bottled water. The food was REALLY, REALLY salty, and since our server was hardly available, I was not too happy with how things went. I love portuguese food, but I would not recommend this place. My aunt got so bored and antsy sitting on the boat outside,waiting, and waiting..that she went into the restaurant to sit at the bar for a change of scenery.

    Most Portuguese people will say that this place is overpriced. It is on the higher end of the spectrum. However, I haven't had a bad meal here, so I'll take it. The food is authentic and delicious. I've recently had the carne alentejana (marinated pork with potatoes and little necks), the bife cogumelos (steak with mushroom sauce), chourico a bombeiro (portuguese sausage lit with alcohol), and the canja (chicken and rice soup) -- all good. Their friend fish filets with seafood sauce and rice will bring you to tears. The interior is gorgeous and the upstairs is perfect for a private party. You can expect to be here for a while, no fast meals. Come in, sit down, have a meal and conversation, a nice espresso afterwards, and you'll be golden.

    The food was good, but waiting 2 hours for food isn't ideal for enjoying one's self. When being told shortly after waiting an hour that our food would be out in just a few minutes, if I were with a smaller group, I would have walked out. Instead, I sat like a fool waiting another hour. Since I was with a large group, walking out really wasn't an option. When the food finally came out, my fries were completely drenched in the sauce that was intended for my steak making them soggy - they hardly tasted like fries as I could only taste the heavy sauce. The steak was good, hence the 2 stars, but everything else was pretty bad; service, the wait, being told "any minute now", etc. etc.. My fiance's steak, ordered medium rare, was thoroughly cooked.

    The food was okay, but I feel like you pay more for the atmosphere than you do for what you're getting. I don't think I'd go back. My family is Portuguese and Cape Verdean, so I know the real deal. It's not bad, don't get me wrong, it's just not worth what they charge. Value is everything.

    Acute food poisoning! I'm in the emergency room drinking a bottle of chalk as they are sticking pads on my chest to monitor my heart. A half a day I spent in the E.R. From eating at Madeira. I have been going there with my family for years. I brought my Mom for lunch that day and I ordered lombinos n brasos... Thin pork chops with the usual thin sliced potatoes and broccoli crowns. I took one bite of pork and my lips, throat, and chest started to burn. I felt like I was going to die. I told the waitress, paid my tab and drove to the E.R. I had to call the restaurant to find out what they put in the food and there wasn't anything I haven't had a hundred times. Red pepper flakes, Red Devil hot sauce, garlic... Something else must have made its way into my food. I thought maybe soap or something. No sooner did the food go down, and everything started to burn. I never got a correspondence from them. They never followed up with me. No "how are you" or "sorry we poisoned you" nothing. I never ate there again. We used to get pork and little necks, baked stuffed shrimp, the tenderloin on a stick and the pork chops. None of it was bad, but I have a little rule on not going back to restaurants that put me in the hospital. I'm guessing it has been four or five years. I'm looking to try a new place called Faial up where my friend lives in Smithfield.

    Expensive and over rated. Your basically paying for the atmosphere. Service is friendly, food is ok. Restaurant look is on the upscale side. There are better and cheaper authentic Portuguese restaurants in East Providence.

    Can't rave about this place more!! Authentic Portuguese cuisine for fair prices and big portions. I always get the stuffed shrimp which also comes with vegetables, yellow rice and roasted potatoes (I always substitute for the Portuguese fries). I recently tried the Gambas a Chef (shrimp in a creamy red sauce), kind of a take on Shrimp Mozambique and it was fantastic!! Excellent service as well! I'm from Boston and come here often! Love, love, love!

    I like Madeira , but I've always felt there were other Portuguese restaurants better than this one. The food isn't bad, but has never impressed me. I feel I get overcharged here or maybe it's because I've tried so many Portuguese restaurants this one doesn't compare to the others. While I may feel like this , you should definitely check it out because they do have great food just not for me.

    I've been to Madeira three times now and twice the service was sub-par. It took about 20 mins to even get the waiter over for a drink order, and then we wanted to order a bottle of Portuguese wine, but didn't know what the names on the menu meant. There were no descriptions in English next to the wine types in Portuguese. So we described what we liked to the server and he didn't know what would be something similar. He told us something about he only works weekends, so he doesn't know. So we simply ordered the malbec off the menu. He said they didn't have it. So we asked for the shiraz on the menu. Nope, don't have that either. So we asked for the merlot. He came back and said they didn't have that either, but had a bottle of cabernet in his hands. Fine, pour it. This alone was enough to scare diners half to death. We ordered the calamari, which was heavily breaded and very rubbery. An indication that the squid was either old or overcooked. If Madeira prides itself on seafood, you gotta know how to cook calamari, especially in Rhode Island! We ordered the bife de casa and the madeira style shishkabob, both medium. Both showed up medium rare. Fortunately this is ok by us, but again, why is it hard to give diners what they ask for? The food was good, not great, definitely heavy on salt. Based on all of this, I definitely do not plan on returning. There are too many other great restaurants in the Providence area to waste time on a place that has sub-par service and can't even stock what is on their wine menu. I can almost see running out of one bottle on the menu, but three? No excuse for things like that.

    It's like having a trip to portugal! So very portuguese! The food can be good depending on what you get! Was disappointed to get the seafood special and it contained those disgusting imitation crab sticks! Drinks are cheap so have plenty of red wine if you plan on using the bathrooms off of the patio/boat. They were horrendous!

    Really loved the whole experience. We were with foodie friends and had a fantastic server who is actually a school teacher working for the summer. She had been a customer for years, so she described the food, sauces and preparation to us in a passionate way. We were seated in the bar side of the restaurant which overlooks the outside terrace. Pleasant and not too loud. They start you off with some wonderful bread and olives. We started with mussels and chorizo. What a presentation on the sausage! It was brought to our table flaming and was soooo good. The mussels were a special that night and were perfectly done with a wonderful sauce. The server recommended a white Portuguese wine that proved to be a very pleasant surprise. Kind of effervescent on your tongue yet not quite sparkling. Bright, crisp, refreshing and a perfect paring for my meal. The dishes we selected were Paella, Carne de Porco Alentejana (Pork & Potatoes in a killer sauce), Espetada `a Albertino II ~ House Specialty (the coolest and best tasting shish kabob you've ever seen or tasted), and Bife `a Casa (Sirloin steak topped with ham and a fried egg). All were tremendous in both quantity and quality. The Paella was different than I was accustomed to in that it had a wonderful garlicky sauce mixed into it making it delightful. The pork and potatoes were cooked to perfection and the sauce made you want to pick up the plate and drink it. The presentation of the filet is just something you have to see for yourself and the meat was so tasty and tender! My husband said his sirloin with the ham and egg were amazing, but he ate it so fast and didn't share, so we have to take his word for it. The deserts were equally wonderful. I highly recommend the bean pudding. It's not pudding at all, it's cake-like. The others were very good, but the bean pudding was the winner at the table. The sauces are the secret in this wonderful establishment. The food is very good, the atmosphere may have been made a little better by having great friends with us and the service was great. It's not 5-star dining, but it's a great meal at a great price.

    The interior of the place is very nice but beware looks can be very deceiving. The service is beyond horrific. We made a reservation and still had to wait when we got there. I didn't mind since it was only 15 minutes. The dining room was really loud. I couldn't hear my bf who was sitting across for me. We ordered shortly after we were seated. We had steak with ham and egg on top and for the two sides that it came with, we had cornmeal and rice. We legit waited for one hour and fifteen minutes till our food finally came out. No apology from the waiter. All he said was that they have large groups to tend to and that we have to be patient while we waited for our dinner. We didn't get to eat till 9:15pm which was ridiculous for a birthday dinner on a Saturday night. I felt so embarrassed because I told my bf that this was supposed to be a special birthday dinner. Thank goodness that the cake came out at a reasonable time since we had a comedy show that we booked right after. Food was okay. It wasn't worth the wait. I didn't like that they poured the gravy all over the steak, cornmeal and rice. It made everything taste the same. Eventually, it became boring and I couldn't eat it anymore. We have decided that we are never going back to this place. There are much better restaurants out there. Do not come here hungry or you will be very disappointed. Also, the bread that they give you before your meal is super dry and hard to eat. No olive oil or anything to dip the bread into. Just plain old butter. It was all very boring.

    I really wanted to like this place but it fell extremely short. Ryan and I wanted to try a new place and I'm a huge fan of Portuguese food. The location of this place is convenient and you'll definitely be surprised with how large the building is. We went here on a Friday night and we decided to eat in the more formal side of the place and it was pretty empty, which was surprising. One thing that I found rather odd about the menu is that they warn you about just how long it might take for your food be prepared: 30-45 mins. Seriously? From the reviews, it looked like it was worth it. Not so much. The service took forever but when we finally got service, it was ok but slow. It was unbelievably warm in the dining room too which made our dinner tough to get though. As far as the food is concerned, the only thing we enjoyed were the little necks with chourico and a red sauce. I don't remember much from the entree and we were pretty bummed when we saw that our bill came out to $65 without a tip. That included a shared app, two entrees and two glasses of house wine. We might come back to try out the more casual side of the place but not so much for the formal area.

    This restaurant is so so. The waiter was cordial,the martini ok. My seafood entree was nothing to rave about. The dessert reminded me of a mix of cool whip and chocolate pudding. Not worth going back.

    First approaching the restaurant was inviting, inside was nice as well. The staff was very friendly and attentive and was good at describing the plates. To start you with they bring sliced bread and assorted olives, Yum. For dinner I had the scrod that was lightly battered with whole potatoes lightly friend served with yellow rice and a tasty sauce over the fish. My friend had the sirloin topped with ham & an egg, yellow rice and fresh sliced friend potatoes. I have to say everything was great and the servings were big.

    Madeira has alot of Portuguese food and a few dishes specific to Madeira (which I didn't try on my last trip about a month ago). I started off with the Shrimp Appetizer (Camarao Alinho), which was hands down the best dish I had there - perfectly done with plenty of sauce for dipping. Next up was the Chourico app (Chourico `a Bombeiro). I've had this flaming Chourico app at a few different places and none of them wowed me except this one - quality was excellent and it was cooked just right. Our main courses were a mixed bag. I have to recommend against getting the cod (bacalau) here, but the house steak was solid. It was a thicker sauce (molho) that made the potatoes and rice go down quick. Service at the bar and table was good and there was plenty of parking. Not much in the neighborhood if you want to go somewhere with bars nearby, but a great location if you want a good spot right off the highway (195). fried cod B- house steak A- good service, huge restaurant, great location (meaning easy to get to from the highway which was ideal - nothing around there) - plenty of parking

    Came with a friend tonight and we were seated right away. They had a party going in the hall upstairs, so the place had loud music, but we didn't mind that so much. Our waiter came with bread and olives, and started taking our orders right away, which was good. We decided to try the appetizer special, which was a calamari Mozambique and it was delicious. I could have eaten a larger portion of that for my entree and been very satisfied because the rings were perfectly cooked, with just a touch of heat from the garlic and peppers. The sauce was so rich and yummy, as we sopped it up with the crusty Portuguese rolls. We both ordered the special entree, which was a combo of sirloin steak tips, shrimp, and chorizo, served in a Madeira wine and mushroom cream sauce. This was served with yellow rice, roasted potatoes, and veggies. Everything about the dish was good, even the portion size. The steak was cooked perfect and tender. The chorizo was lean and flavorful. The shrimp was good but it wasn't peeled, which made it messy to eat. But the best thing about the whole dish, was the Mediera cream sauce. It was so darn good, I could drink that straight from a bottle! This is an entree that I wish they had on their regular menu. Even though it's very rich, I think it would be quite popular. As for the prices, the appetizer was about $9.99, and the entree was about $19.99. Overall, the atmosphere and the service were good, while the food was great. I will be back again.

You really do pay for what you get, and you really get good quality food here, and plenty of it. it was realy dead the other night when we went in, which sucks cause it is such a nice attmoshpere when it is alive and kickin' Stop in and I'm sure that you'll understand.

    One of my best friends and I frequent this place as our off the beaten path regular dinner spot. When the two of us go anywhere we're bombarded by people we know, but not here. Its refreshing, quaint and peaceful. I feel like I'm at grandmas house every time I'm there . We always have the same Waitress too, who quickly remembers us from our last visit. He always has steak and I will kill for any of their seafood dishes. Soooo yummm. Haven't been recently, but writing this review has solidified my dinner plans this week, see you Soon M! **** Went in for lunch after writing the above review, never been for lunch. Loved it, treated a friend to a birthday meal (shes never had Portuguese food) and she loved it as well. As always, I had a fish dish. Had the shrimp over rice, to die for!

    The Mrs. and I went on a Thursday night and arrived about 8:00PM. There was a good sized party of women who hadn't seen each other in decades so they were kind of noisy but not offensive, and certainly not what I would call bothersome. If they had been I am sure we could have moved our table. Our server (I believe Wendy was her name) was very pleasant and gave very convincing descriptions of the menu selections; she even used the word 'magical' to describe the sauces. We started with a half-pitcher of sangria that was accompanied by olives and bread. We each had the kale soup which was a different take on the kale soup we are accustomed to. The kale was shredded and there was only two chorizo discs, but it had good flavor. Bife `a Casa Pan-seared sirloin steak topped with a slice of ham & fried egg in a garlic, red wine & mild spices sauce served with rice, Portuguese fries & seasonal vegetables. - Steak was cooked to order (medium rare) and flavorful. Steak served with ham and egg made for a filling meal so there was plenty to bring home. Shrimp Mozambique - daily special I am usually not one to order shrimp as an entree because I always seem to feel ripped off by the portion size. This was not the case this time. There was a pretty large platter of shrimp in a Mozambique sauce that was tasty, but not spicy. It came with Portuguese fries and rice (still mystifies me every time I order it). The vegetables were cooked close to perfectly, which is barely cooked at all. We finished the meal with flan which is made at the restaurant. When in Lisbon do as the Lisbonics do. Things I will do differently next time: After the sangria was done we each had a vodka - rocks. Next time we will have the second order of sangria because it would have gone nicely with the meal and the price was pretty good. One half pitcher gave us each two servings, and at $9.95/pitcher it's cost effective. We would have sat outside (weather and seasonality permitting). I'd do it again!

    My guess is most Portuguese restaurant owners around here are from the Azores b/c the menu items are pretty standard and prepared very similarly. Granted, Madeira is a nicer setting than most comparable restaurants, and the people are very welcoming, but you definitely pay for it since the prices here are on the higher end.

    We eat here all the time. We order a different bottle of wine and a different meal most times. The chorizo a bombeiro is excellent. The salmon and shrimp with Mozambique sauce was phenomenal. We always have great service and get seated right away. It's our "go to quick dinner" place. Love it.

    I've eaten here a few times. Food is salty and garlic-y but that is the case with many Portuguese dishes. I usually get the huge seafood meals that come in a giant pan and have like 6 different types of seafood. The Portuguese steak is yummy, too. Sometimes the service isn't good but it can get packed there and it is a fairly big restaurant (including the outside area). Very authentic Portuguese food and prices are decent. Eat there on someone else's dime. Parking can also be an issue.

    I was here the this past weekend. Dropped by for drinks. I tried the Portuguese Cabernet that Gary-Sousa recommended. It was great! Friendly staff. Cheap drinks and a great social owner. I'll definitely be back for the food.
